Diving towards sell annuity payment ribbon strung across the red reslite track the world is yours, as you taste the ultimate victory. The 800-meter is Cool McCool race that most super star athletes have a love hate relationship with. It is the most agonizing and grueling race there is for most.
The sprinters hate it because the workouts kill them and stretch their fast twitch muscles. Not long ago I received an email asking my advice for training for the race and my mind went into a flashback of the victories and the agony that goes with that level of performance pushing your body beyond Wine is possible. I had run my best times in College (all at sea level) and many invitational track meets mostly around CA.
That was a while ago. The gentleman asked me my best time, and the 800 Meter Glory Days went dancing through my head. I guess my midlife crisis must have come early I thought it was not the times I remember, rather the pain. If you can handle that, nothing else will ever shake you, indeed you can handle anything. I do not remember what my fastest 880 or 800 meter time was?
I believe I got into the 1:40's a couple of times probably not by much, maybe that was my goal, I cannot remember 1:48 comes to mind, but I cannot remember if I actually achieved it, probably did, usually I was able to make my goals in track. Of course those were the Glory Days, right?
Where you are one with the track and the friction burns your feet, coming off the last lap like a bat out of hell and wondering if you will die or blast thru that tape at a full-clip. Mostly I was a mile runner, but the 800 meter was my demon. Yes, I do remember the pain; a couple of times I would have rather died than endure the pain. Wow, but if the 800-meter will not kill you, nothing can. Hmm? Yah, wow, thanks for the memories.
